College football fans finally have what they've been wanting; the playoff rankings! Now in my opinion, the playoffs need to be expanded from four teams to allow a more competitive edge. The NCAA and Committee will get there, once they see some more $$$ coming out of the four team playoff. So, four teams or eight, I'm here to break it down.
1. Georgia - If there's any fan base that is shocked to see themselves at the top, it's UGA. Coming off of a 42-7 demolition of Florida, the Bulldogs have been red hot so far this season. Other notable wins include a one point close call versus Notre Dame and 41 point shut out of Tennessee. Their starting lineup consists of mainly seniors, which is always a recipe for success when you're an SEC team. I don't expect to see them at the number one spot, with Bama and Ohio State coming for blood.
2. Alabama - Do I really need to analyze this? Not really, so I'm not going to go into too much detail. Bama is a top contender year after year, as long as Nick Saban has been at the helm. Their most ridiculous win this season was at home against Ole Miss, where the absolutely annihilated the Rebels, 66-3. Saban is a genius of a college football coach, and as long as he's at Bama, they will consistently be ranked at the top.
3. Notre Dame - With a Heisman caliber running back in Josh Adams, it's no surprise that the Fighting Irish are at number three. Coming off a win against the competitive NC State Wolfpack, Adams rushed for 202 yards and 1 TD. They've dominated their schedule, with only one loss against the Georgia Bulldogs, and even that was only by one. As a team without a conference, ND has done nothing but blow out the competition to prove they belong in the college football playoff talk.
4. Clemson - This is one of the rankings I was more surprised by. Clemson lost by three against an unranked, uncompetitive Syracuse team. Their ACC schedule doesn't have quite the gusto that an SEC or Big Ten one might, but they do have quarterback Kelly Bryant at the helm. Bryant is a generally consistent passer week to week, however struggles in the second half of games. We'll see how long Clemson stays in the top.
The team that I was most surprised by was Wisconsin. The Badgers, Miami (FL), and UCF are the ONLY undefeated teams not in the top four as of right now. While the Badgers strength of schedule might be questionable, they are winning out all their games scheduled in their division of the B1G, most of the time within the spread. What the Badgers do is force other teams to play at their speed. I truly believe that if they win out their schedule, there should be no question that they are in the top four.
